Vopnafjörður is a town situated on the southeastern shore of Kolbeinstangi spit. Its population was 550 on December 1st  2006 whereas the popultion of the municipality as a whole was 712.

Just offshore are two islets, Miðhólmi and Skiphólmi, which form the harbor. A man made breakwater that serves as protection from the ocean waves connects them.

A walking path leads along the breakwater. Vopnafjörður is an ancient trading post that thousands of people passed through during the Icelandic emigration to the West.

Its main industries are fishing, fish processing, and trade/services. Vopnafjörður has a primary school and a music school, a church, the Kaupvangur cultural centre, the Mikligarður community centre, a hotel, a health centre and a swimming pool in Selárdalur, some 12km away.

A cultural festival with diverse events is held during the second-to-last week in July every year.
